My Morning Jacket headlined the "Rock for Riley" benefit concert at Butler University’s Clowes Hall, Indianapolis, IN., raising over $204,000 for Riley Hospital for children. Word on the street has it that the five–piece from Louisville, KY is one of America's greatest live bands and given their performance, My Morning Jacket is living up to their rep. The band features Indiana native and Indiana University grad, Carl Broemel who majored in classical guitar and Jim James, vocals/guitar, who was awarded an ‘Esky’ for best songwriter in Esquire’s 2006 Esky Awards. Add ‘Two Tone Tommy’ on Bass, Bo Koster on Keyboards, and Patrick Hallahan on drums and you’ve got a group of highly skilled musicians who make up the durable fabric of My Morning Jacket.
Described as classic Americana music, MMJ makes you feel like you’re driving down that big old country highway. Picturesque lyrics combined with simple melodies and harmonies equate to a home spun musical quilt stitched with vivid rock and roll colors. Clearly, the music weighs as heavily as the lyrics and when laced together, they tuck their audience inside a comfy, cozy musical blanket.
Touring in support of their latest release, Okonokos (live)-2006 the band appeared at major festivals this year which included Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Austin City Limits. MMJ also opened for Pearl Jam during the first leg of their 2006 tour.
MMJ will appear on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, November 29th and will remain on tour though January 2007.
